This company is known for excellence in complex, process-related construction projects—including refining, power generation, and renewable energy. It offers a collaborative environment, low employee turnover, and long-standing leadership (with the CFO having over 30 years at the company).

Position Summary
An experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller or Controller is needed to support and oversee accounting operations within a dynamic industrial construction environment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, internal controls, compliance, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a construction accounting background, strong knowledge of union payroll practices, and hands-on experience with industry-specific tools like Spectrum and HCSS HeavyJob.

This is a 100% onsite role based in Bellingham, WA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, job cost, and payroll

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes and reporting

  • Prepare internal and external financial statements and management reports

  • Partner with project managers and estimators to align financial data with project performance

  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and enforce internal controls

  • Prepare and file certified payroll and multi-state union payroll reports

  • Support audits and assist with tax preparation

  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting systems and processes

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required

  • Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, ideally in construction

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and job cost accounting

  • Certified payroll and union labor accounting experience is required

  • Proficiency with Spectrum ERP and HCSS HeavyJob highly preferred

  • Strong analytical and communication skills

  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively

  • CPA is a plus, but not required
